Roma, home of ruins, relics, churches, chapels, fountains, frescoes, towers…whew! And to think that the lonely planet and Rick Steves books suggested a half day, impossible. We were stationed close to the key sites with a B&B for two nights. Starting our day with the Colosseum, Palatine hill took the better part of the morning, we utilized the metro which sped us to the Vatican where we walked the grounds, Basilica St. Pietro, and reviewed the Vatican Museum. I may have missed the David in Florence but I can say that I stood below one of the finest works of Michelangelo, the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, for me the highlight of the day. Unfortunately, the Papa was not to be seen today.
The history in Europe is hard to grasp, even more so when in Rome. To see the scale and quality of the remains of the Roman Empire that existed, long before the birth of Christ is just amazing. I marvel that the Romans were able to create these massive buildings that have stood for thousands of years. It is also a little shocking to learn what they considered sport and the amount of life that was lost.
Gary noticed that there are lots of what seem to be healthy cats everywhere. I even noticed a fine little orange kitty inside the Vatican walls, taking pets from passers that reached in through the fence. Nice to see because I’m missing my fat cat a very much these days and our lack of internet has created a gap in the Tigger reports.
